"Oh, Captain! My captain! The difficult flight is completed": "Society of Dead Poets" from the Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication at the student spring of SFedU

28.03.2024

On March 27, the student spring of the Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication of the SFedU "Society of Dead Poets" took place within the walls of Regional house of folk art. The student's production was based on the 1989 film of the same name, Dead Poets Society. In the story, a new literature teacher, John Keating, gets a job at the Welton Academy. For students, he becomes a favorite teacher, because he is distinguished from the prim mass of other teachers by his ease of communication, eccentric behavior and disregard for the curriculum.

The main idea that John Keating conveys to his students is contained in the ancient Latin expression Carpe Diem, that is, "Seize the moment."

"As we speak, envious time is passing. Seize the moment, trust the future as little as possible."

One day, John Keating initiates his students Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, Knox Overstreet and Charlie Dalton into the secret of the Dead Poets Society. From that moment on, each of the students tries to find his own voice in the faceless choir, to look at the world around him, jumping high above the gray school fence.

The poetic energy of the main characters sweeps away everything in its path. Bright and authentic costumes, perfectly conveyed the spirit of the students and, of course, a massive vocal performance by Gaudeamus. The Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication students again surprise the viewer with their neon show, if last year the main character turned into a dude, now the academy students make their way through the neon wilds to the very cave where, being a society of dead poets, they read poetry.

Tradition, honor, discipline, and excellence are the four pillars of Welton Academy. Creativity, freedom, love, friendship are the four pillars of the Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication of the Southern Federal University. And this student spring was able to convey all these ideas to the viewer, leaving them impressed by what they saw.

Being a poet means being a student at the Southern Federal University! And the performance of the Institute of Philology, Journalism and Intercultural Communication certainly confirmed this.
