Alexey Sazonov, a graduate student at the Institute of Earth Sciences of the Southern Federal University, took part in the III School of Practice of Polar Limnologists, which took place in the Murmansk region on Lake Imandra from June 30 to July 6.
The school was organized by the Institute of Industrial Ecology Problems of the North of the Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Water Problems of the North of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
During the school, the participants listened to lectures and conducted field training studies on hydrochemistry, geochemistry of bottom sediments, hydrophysics, ichthyology, biotesting and bioindication on the example of Lake Imandra.
The purpose of the Practice School was to attract novice researchers to solve the problems of the ecological state of water bodies in the Arctic, increase the knowledge and skills of young scientists in the field of limnology (a section of hydrology that studies the physical, chemical and biological aspects of reservoirs, including lakes) and create a basis for attracting specialists from different cities of Russia to work in scientific and scientific educational organizations in the North of Russia.
Alexey Sazonov said that the school of polar limnologists is unique due to its extensive practical component.
"Like every participant of the school, I completed a full cycle of training: lectures, sampling at a water body, primary laboratory analysis, statistical processing of the results obtained and their presentation in the form of a report with a discussion.
It should be noted that communication with experienced scientists in an informal setting is also very valuable. I personally made sure that this is a very effective format for transferring knowledge and skills, some of which I plan to apply in my PhD thesis," said graduate student of SFedU Institute of Earth Sciences.
For the opportunity to take part in the event, the graduate student of the SFedU thanks the director of the Institute of Earth Sciences Andrey Nikolaevich Kuznetsov, as well as a classmate Marina Antsiferova for her support and help with documents.
