The history of the Russian language, Old Slavonic and Church Slavonic; distinctive features of Marina Tsvetayeva’s individual style. The major area of research is historical syntax and word-building.

Introduction to the Science of Language
The course contains the basic facts about language and its functions, as well as the linguistic typology of languages and linguistic affinity. It introduces the major concepts of linguistics related to phonetic, lexical and grammatical levels of language.

Old Slavonic
The course deals with the origins of Slavic writing system and Slavic alphabets, the phonetic system of the Old Slavonic and its previous history, characteristics of the Old Slavonic grammar and the way it was used in the Old Slavonic written records.

Contemporary Religious Discourse
The course introduces the pattern of religious discourse, describes its genre domain, the system of values and key concepts. Within the framework of the course, Church Slavonic is taught as the language employed in the Orthodox public worship, and students learn the basic skills of reading, translating and analyzing the texts written in Church Slavonic.
