1. Problems and perspectives of sustainable development of the regions of the South of Russia.
2. Spatial organization of the society and territorial planning.
3. Environmental management.
4. Ecological safety of the regions of the South of Russia.
5. Water resources management.
Research projects:
During his time as a responsible executive and head of A.D. Khavansky participated in the implementation of scientific research in the framework of regional, federal and international programs: "Integrated management and rational use of water resources of the North Caucasus region" (1996-2000, Chalkrou, Great Britain), "Support for the national contribution of Georgia, Russia and Ukraine in implementation of the Bucharest Convention and the Strategic Action Plan "(1997-2000, ICWS, Netherlands)," Training in environmental management in the Volga basin "(1998-2001, COWI, Denmark)," Development of a security management strategy about (2001-2002, CPRP, Moscow), Development of an environmental management system for the gas industry (2003-2008, Kavkaztransgaz, OAO Gazprom), Development of spatial planning schemes for the Astrakhan region and Republic of Adygea (2006-2007, South Russian town-planning center), Evaluation and maintenance of ecological safety of the resort city of Bolshoe Sochi (2005-2007, Department of the Ministry for Emergency Situations in the city of Sochi).
According to the results of the work more than 100 published works were published, including 15 monographs and teaching aids.
