27 мая 2026 г.

On May 26, the SFedU History Museum hosted a presentation of the musical and poetic cycle "Tales of the Botanical Garden", created by Russian composer, pianist and teacher Alexei Hevelev.

The cycle, which includes twelve piano pieces (according to the number of months in a year) based on poems by Ekaterina Heveleva, is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the SFedU Botanical Garden, which will be celebrated in 2027. The event was held as part of a meeting of the university's faculty club.

Alexey Hevelev is a well—known musician who has toured in Russia, Israel, Canada, Finland, Great Britain, Italy and Moldova, on the stages of the Rossiya State Central Concert Hall, the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, and the Sochi Organ Hall. In 2025, he was elected chairman of the Rostov regional public organization Union of Composers of Russia. Among his awards is the gold medal of the International Prokofiev Festival in Great Britain as the best continuer of the traditions of S. Prokofiev (1991), the Governor's Award for significant contribution to the development of culture and art of the Rostov region (2013), the Presidential Scholarship of the Russian Federation (2015) and the award of the Government of the Rostov region "Person of the Year" in the nomination "Composer" (2017).

Anatoly Metelitsa, First Vice-rector of the Southern Federal University, addressing the participants, emphasized the dual value of the Botanical Garden. On the one hand, it is a scientific tool with which scientists conduct research, on the other hand, it is an important aesthetic component, a place where citizens enjoy communicating with nature. He particularly noted that the SFedU Botanical Garden can be an object of inspiration, and composer Alexey Hevelev took an important and interesting step by dedicating his work to the garden. According to him, such works addressing the university and its Botanical Garden are rare, and this gives the event special significance.

The director of the SFedU Botanical Garden, Professor Tatiana Varduni, said that the garden, which turns one hundred years old, is often called a pearl, and this pearl attracts many wonderful people. She shared the story of her acquaintance with the composer: one day, a piece she accidentally heard made such a strong impression that they began looking for the author to get to know him personally. This is how she met Alexey and Ekaterina Hevelev, who, according to her, gave the garden a lot of positive emotions and a real celebration.

Composer Alexey Hevelev, presenting his cycle, shared his personal connection with the university and the Botanical Garden. He said that the Southern Federal University and the Botanical Garden are two halves of his heart for him, since his parents graduated from SFedU, and his wife Ekaterina is also a graduate of the university. A few years ago, they began visiting the Botanical Garden almost weekly. He was most impressed by the muscari blossom, under the impression of which he wrote the play and published it on his page. This is how a friendship with Tatiana Viktorovna Varduni began. The composer thanked her for her response to the idea of creating a musical and poetic cycle "Tales of the Botanical Garden", consisting of twelve plays. For him, this cycle became a new creative story, a very important milestone in his work — a dedication to the Botanical Garden and the Southern Federal University.

Sergey Dyuzhikov, Chairman of the SFedU Trade Union Organization and organizer of the Professors' club, noted that the format of meetings is changing along with the university and the environment. He stressed the importance of the presence of young colleagues — candidates of sciences and aspiring teachers, for whom it is necessary to create the right guidelines. According to him, young people should understand that a professor is not a position or a title, but a human vocation based on pedagogical, methodological, research and educational activities aimed at preparing students and transferring knowledge. He also said that the university has a tradition of inviting aspiring teachers to meetings of the club. In addition, Sergey Dyuzhikov drew attention to the presence of university partners — organizations and graduates who, together with the university, create unique projects. He thanked Professor Tatiana Varduni for her creative approach and the invitation of partners who helped in the design of the hall and the informative presentation of the Botanical Garden.

The real decoration of the meeting were beautiful bouquets of peonies provided by the permanent partner of the SFedU Botanical Garden, the Floriculture magazine and decorated by phytodesigner Vasily Davydov.

The presentation of the cycle "Tales of the Botanical Garden" became a highlight in a series of events dedicated to the centenary of one of the main "pearls" of the Southern Federal University. The meeting of the professors' club once again demonstrated the versatility of university life, where scientific and educational activities are harmoniously combined with creativity, and partnership with cultural figures opens up new facets of perception of university traditions.
