A professor from Greece gave a lecture at the mathematical seminar of the Russian Scientific Research Center SFedU

13 февраля 2026 г.

On February 12, a lecture by Angelo Cifaleras, Professor at the University of Macedonia, Greece, was held as part of the regular scientific seminar of the RSEMC SFedU. The seminar was led by Professors A.N. Karapetyants and V.V. Kravchenko.

Angelo Sifaleras is a Ph.D., Full Professor at the Department of Applied Computer Science at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is also the director of the Master's Degree program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics at the University of Macedonia, a member of the Computational Methodologies & Operations Research Laboratory (CMOR Lab), co-editor of the Springer Operations Research Forum and editor of the Yaroslav Journal of Operations Research (YUJOR) section. He has published more than 120 scientific papers, including 45 books. Professor Cifaleras' research interests include many areas of mathematical programming and network optimization.

On February 12, Professor Cifaleras gave a lecture on intelligent self-adaptive stochastic optimization methods. Stochastic optimization methods such as differential evolution and genetic algorithms provide powerful tools for solving computationally complex problems, from combinatorial optimization to numerical approximation. One of the fundamental problems of these methods is the choice of parameters: their effectiveness significantly depends on the values of the parameters, which traditionally requires extensive offline tuning experiments. In his lecture, Angelo Cifaleras presented the latest achievements in the field of self-adaptive optimization methods in which parameters are automatically adjusted during stochastic search. The principles underlying these adaptive mechanisms were considered, using the example of metaheuristics of search with a variable neighborhood, as well as open research problems in this area.

The seminar "Seminar on Analysis, Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics" was attended by more than forty mathematicians - specialists from the world's leading scientific and educational centers in Russia and other countries, including graduate students and students of the SFedU Institute of Mathematics, Mechanics and Computer Science and young scientists.

Online scientific seminar of the Regional Scientific and Educational Mathematical Center (https://rmc.sfedu.ru /) it is held regularly every two weeks, announcements of new seminars and videos of previous seminars are available on the website http://msrn.sfedu.ru/sl . The seminar features leading researchers from around the world whose research interests are related to analysis, differential equations, and mathematical physics. The scientific seminar of the mathematical center is open, everyone can take part in it.

Southern Federal University, being a participant of the strategic academic leadership program "Priority 2030" (national project "Youth and Children"), concentrates efforts on solving the tasks of scientific and technological development of the country. As part of this work, the university creates full-cycle production and technological chains based on the network architecture of interaction to respond to "big challenges". The key areas of development cover a number of critical and end-to-end technologies that underlie three key strategic technological projects of the university: "Technologies of soil bioengineering", "Technologies of multifunctional microelectronics and intelligent sensors for biohybrid and cyberphysical systems" and "Technologies for accelerated development and transfer of strategically important materials in micro and low-tonnage production".
