Projects of SFedU students receive their first venture capital investments

27.04.2021

On April 24, the first SFedU Exponent demo day was held at Southern Federal University.

The SFedU Exponent demo day became a platform where students ' projects using breakthrough technologies were able to go beyond the academic plane, and developers, instead of being evaluated in a test book by a teacher, received real capital from an investor to implement their idea.

The new format was supported by organizations and companies actively engaged in the development of digital technologies and technological entrepreneurship: Innovation Agency of the Rostov Region, Innovation Promotion Fund, Foundation for Innovative Development of Education and Science, Scientific and Design Bureau of Computer Systems, Taganrog Research Institute of Communications (Concern Radio-electronic Technologies), Research Institute "Specialvuzavtomatika", NPK "On-board Intelligent Systems", "Inostudio Solutions", Umbrella IT, Distillery, Dunice, DDOS-GUARD," IT Premium"," Indigo Systems", Storytelling Software, Shellpea, K-Development and others.

On Saturday, the first nine projects were presented to experts and investors in the Winter Garden of Engineering and Technology Academy of SFedU. Many of them were developed within the framework of the students ' project activities, which are conducted under the guidance of mentors on the basis of the Project Office and laboratories of the Student Design Bureau "Computer Innovative Creativity" of the Institute of Computer Technologies and Information Security of the Southern Federal University. Graduates of SFeduNet intensive courses based on the 20.35 University model and the SBS Accelerator of the Southern Federal University presented their projects.

Projects of the first demo day:

  • The "Sixth Sense" is an indoor navigation system for people with visual disabilities, which helps a visually impaired person to navigate and find a safe route to the right place in the room. The mobile app accepts BLE sensor signals;
  • SMARTZHK is a service for housing and communal services, which helps to solve all issues of housing and communal services management simply and quickly and to take an active position in the life of the house. For the management company, this application provides an opportunity to see the full picture of what is happening and to carry out convenient interaction with residents remotely;
  • "Vacation Animals" is an application based on the Unity engine with the ability to interact with the neurointerface, which in a playful way trains concentration, reaction and the ability to quickly move to the desired resource state. The app is being developed for elementary school students.
  • "FlowTok" is a service designed to help young artists gain fame, and ticktockers or bloggers-financial support. The essence of the product is the interaction between the artist and ticktockers-people who will promote their tracks through special tasks from artists or advertisers, receiving financial support for this;
  • "H-index SFedU" is a system for improving scientometric indicators of a scientific organization. Due to the large flow of publications, it is difficult for scientists to independently track all significant printed works on a topic of interest. This web platform solves this problem and recommends publications for citation that can help the researcher increase the Hirsch index;
  • "SmartShelf" is a system of inventory of scientific equipment in the laboratory. This process is implemented using a reader that receives data from the item label, transmits it to the server, where it is processed and transmitted to the client side;
  • "The system of monitoring, diagnostics and forecasting of the state of engineering objects based on artificial intelligence" allows timely maintenance of engineering objects: aircraft, ground transport, engineering structures, which solves the problem of safety of their operation;
  • CryptoGalaxy is a space-themed game based on blockchain technology. Saves players from cheating and substitution of game items in the inventory by developers, and also destroys the stereotype that Blockchain technology applies only to the field of cryptocurrency operations;
  • "Exchange of practices" is a platform that provides a process of mutual selection of students and companies( matching), automatic selection of competencies in the student's specialty. Thus, the platform allows students to practice exactly in the specialty in which they are studying at the university.

All SFedU Exponent participants received feedback from industry experts who reviewed each project in terms of its strengths, weaknesses, risks, and opportunities.

Umbrella IT was the first company to invest in a solution for planning the maintenance of engineering facilities based on artificial intelligence, which was presented by the Design Center of the Microelectronic Component Base for Artificial Intelligence Systems of the Southern Federal University. This system is distinguished by the presence of secure technologies and the potential for rapid scalability-from complex engineering structures to the rail economy of Russian Railways.

Today, the main source of funding for student projects is the programs of the Foundation for the Promotion of Innovation. Private venture investments are the missing "fifth element" of the startup ecosystem that is developing in Taganrog. The next event at the Southern Federal University will be held in the fall.

Among the graduates of SFedU is a serial technology entrepreneur Dmitry Dumik, a native of Taganrog. The meeting of SFedU students with a successful graduate is scheduled for April 29 at 16.00 (Engineering and Technology Academy SFedU). Another speaker, Dmitry Matskevich, will also take part in it.

In 2016, Taganrog hosted a Startup tour of the Skolkovo Foundation, and in December 2020, it entered the top five of the popular vote "IT Capital of Russia". One of the new tourist routes of Taganrog is called "Peter the Great's Startup".
