On March 24, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation hosted a meeting of the Russian-Cuban Working Group on Cooperation in Higher Education.
The meeting was attended by Konstantin Mogilevsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Reinaldo Velasquez Saldivar, Deputy Minister of Higher Education of the Republic of Cuba, as well as representatives of Russian and Cuban universities (University of Havana, Havana University of Technology, MOA University, Southern Federal University, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg Mining University of the Empress Catherine II, the Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language, etc.).
Natalia Karpovskaya, the Rector's Plenipotentiary representative in the countries of the Ibero-American area, Director of the International Institute of Interdisciplinary Education and Ibero-American Studies, made a presentation at the event on behalf of the SFedU. Among the main issues raised in the message were the activities of the SFedU Branch in Havana (Republic of Cuba) and the Comprehensive internship Program for Cuban students in the Russian Federation "Internship in Russia – a step towards success."
Natalia Valeryevna said in her speech that since September 2025, the Branch, which opened in April 2025, has been implementing additional general development programs in the Russian language, cultural and educational events aimed at familiarizing Cuban listeners with the history of Russia, Russian education, science and culture.
Due to the great interest shown by Cubans in the additional programs implemented by the Branch, as well as taking into account the requests from students regarding problems with transport and electricity, in October 2025, it was decided to hold classes in different locations in Havana. Thus, at the request of the University of Havana, an elective course on "Fundamentals of the Russian Language" for two groups of students of this university was held at the central campus.
The sites of the National Library named after Jose Marti served as another location for the implementation of the educational activities of the Branch. From October to December 2025, students were trained here with the support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, and three new programs were developed for them, including the Russian Language for Professional Communication program, which trained translators, teachers, journalists, and guides.
According to Natalia Karpovskaya, since February 3, four more additional education programs have been launched in the full-time format at the Branch. To date, 84 people have been enrolled in them. During the forced transition to distance learning, the SFedU Branch uses various electronic resources (Moodle, social networks, etc.) to provide an asynchronous learning format in which students can access an educational resource at a time when they have the opportunity. Russian language manuals for Spanish-speaking students, developed by the author's team of the Department of Russian as a Foreign language and methods of teaching it at the SFedU, are used in the Branch.
Among the cultural and educational events organized at the Branch, a meeting dedicated to the National Unity Day, a state holiday of Russia, should be highlighted. The event included a lecture, virtual guided tours and a quiz. The audience was particularly interested in information about the Don region, about the traditions, way of life and culture of the Don Cossacks, about the outstanding writer, Nobel laureate Mikhail Sholokhov and his novel "The Quiet Don".
At the end of her speech, Natalia Valeryevna emphasized that the SFedU Branch is ready to implement pre-university training programs at the Preparatory Faculty for all those who plan to study at Russian universities, and is open to further work taking into account the current needs and interests of the Cuban side. In turn, all representatives of Cuban universities noted the significant contribution of SFedU not only to the development of interuniversity cooperation, but also to strengthening ties between our countries.
