"The Prophet": Pushkin through the eyes of a new generation

30 марта 2026 г.

On March 23, the Rostov-on-Don Regional House of Folk Art hosted a concert "The Prophet. The History of Alexander Pushkin" Institute of Tourism, Service and Creative Industries SFedU.

The student production of the same name is based on the Russian biographical feature musical film "The Prophet. The Story of Alexander Pushkin", released in 2025.

The student performance begins at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, where the supervisor Piletsky scolds one of the lyceum students, Alexander Pushkin, in class. He denies him literary talent and expresses dissatisfaction with the impudent young man. But for Pushkin, the main values are truth and freedom, which he is ready to defend.

At one of the social meetings in St. Petersburg, his lyceum friend Pushchin introduces the young poet Vasily Zhukovsky. Pushkin reads his ode "Liberty" to the founder of Russian Romanticism, the main idea of which is a protest against absolutism.

In the winter of 1817, after one of the parties with friends, Pushkin gets to a fortune teller. Among the predictions are marriage, death from the "white horse" and "white head".

His bold poems do not go unnoticed, and after a while Pushkin was detained and sent into Southern exile, despite the intercession of influential people.

In Crimea, Pushkin meets the wife of the Governor-General of Novorossiya, Elizabeth Vorontsova, who is a fan of his work. Tender feelings flare up between the poet and the Countess. The count, on the contrary, is hostile to Pushkin. The poet was again sent into exile to the Mikhailovskoye family estate.

However, despite his fears, the exile gave the poet the opportunity to work on new works, including the poems "Gypsies", "Prisoner of the Caucasus", the novel "Eugene Onegin", a cycle of fairy tales. These works will later bring the poet national and world fame.

Ivan Pushchin, who visited Alexander Sergeyevich in Mikhailovsky, shares rumors from St. Petersburg about a possible change of emperor due to Alexander I's illness. In this case, the most progressive part of society is counting on changes related to the abolition of censorship. However, the December uprising of 1825 is defeated and his friend finds himself in exile.

Meanwhile, the poet was invited to St. Petersburg for a conversation with the new Emperor Nicholas I. There, the monarch offers friendship to Pushkin in the form of patronage. In return, the king gets the right to be the first to read and approve everything he writes.

As the story progresses, the fateful events predicted by the fortune teller come true: the marriage to Natalia Goncharova and the duel with Dantes in the finale of the production, as a result of which the poet dies.

Amateur actors tried to convey the greatness of poetry and the drama of the life of the national genius not only through the facts of his biography and lines of works, but also through the events of the era. The soundtracks from the movie "The Prophet", modern dances, designer costumes and lighting accompaniment add entertainment to the performance.
