The undergraduate of the SFedU was awarded by the Ambassador of Vietnam

On August 26, in Moscow, the Embassy of Vietnam in the Russian Federation celebrated the 79th Independence Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 2024).

Speaking at the celebration, Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi confirmed Vietnam's consistent foreign policy, the successes achieved by the country in recent years in socio-economic development, and the special friendship between Vietnam and Russia. The Embassy of Vietnam in the Russian Federation will do everything possible to further strengthen the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia. On the occasion of the celebration, a concert was prepared for the guests, which was attended by artists and dance groups from both countries, whose skills have already won recognition in the international arena.

In addition, within the framework of the solemn event, Russian and Vietnamese students and students who have made significant efforts to strengthen Russian-Vietnamese relations were awarded.

Bui Bao Thien, a graduate student, intern researcher at the Department of Oceanology at the Institute of Earth Sciences of the Southern Federal University, received a diploma and a medal for excellent academic and scientific achievements, support for the Vietnamese community in Russia. The awards were presented to Thien by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to the Russian Federation, Dang Minh Hoi.

In total, the Embassy of the Republic noted the achievements of 20 compatriots – students and postgraduates.

The award from the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia is not so much financial assistance as motivation for new achievements in science and assistance to compatriots," says Bui Bao Thien.

Bui Bao Thien entered the Southern Federal University in 2023 for a master's degree in Ecology and Environmental Management at the Master's program "Applied Geoecology", which is implemented by two departments: the Department of Geoecology and Applied Geochemistry and the Department of Oceanology. From the very first days of his studies, he began actively engaged in scientific research under the guidance of employees of the Department of Oceanology Alexander Ioshpa and Denis Krivoguz.

In 2024, he was hired at the Department of Oceanology as a research intern. In 2 years, the young researcher has published 13 scientific articles in foreign scientific journals, 4 of them in highly rated journals (Q1 and Q2).

In his research, Bui Bao Thien uses remote sensing methods and geographic information systems using multispectral satellite images to analyze land use and land cover changes (LULC), especially on agricultural lands in Vietnam and Laos. Ongoing scientific research helps in the effective management of natural resources, monitoring and development, especially in the field of urban planning. Senior colleagues help with advice, give tasks for the development of critical thinking necessary in research work. Teachers of Ioshpa A.R., Krivoguz D.O. and Hovsepyan A.E. made a great contribution to the adaptation of Bui Bao Thien to scientific and educational conditions.
