A graduate of the Southern Federal University on how regional studies can become successful

09.07.2024

We continue to tell the successful stories of graduates of the Southern Federal University. Vladislav Makarov is a graduate of the Institute of Sociology and Regional Studies of the Southern Federal University.

In 2018, Vlad graduated from the Bachelor's degree of the Southern Federal University in the field of "Foreign Regional Studies".

The educational program is aimed at training professional regional specialists who are in demand in various fields, ranging from translators of Oriental languages in embassies to specialists in trading firms and large corporations, as well as in public administration and the national security system.

"As a student, I tried to participate in many scientific conferences and forums: Lomonosov, Peace to the Caucasus, Path to Science, etc. I played football, chess, "What? Where? When?", together with like-minded people, he organized a discussion club. I had the opportunity to participate twice in the rally within the framework of the forum "Peace to the Caucasus" and visit almost all regions of Southern Russia. In addition to science, forums and a car rally are a great opportunity to get acquainted with the history and culture of the peoples of your country not from textbooks," Vladislav Makarov said.

For a future specialist, practice is a necessary tool for professional development. During his studies, Vlad had an internship at the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Rostov region. The graduate added that one of the practical tasks was a detailed retelling and analysis in English of the scientific work on soft power by international relations expert Joseph Nye. Later, Vlad defended his graduation thesis on this topic, but from the perspective of Russian foreign policy.

"Now I work as an Attache at the Russian Foreign Ministry's Representative Office in Rostov-on-Don. I deal with consular issues. It is important to understand that education is not limited to student years, it is an ongoing process. Therefore, first of all, I want to thank my teachers at the institute for teaching me how to study. It helps me almost every day. The role of "Foreign regional studies" in classical humanitarian education will steadily grow. In the era of the formation of new centers of power on the world stage, regional scientists are in demand as specialists capable of solving non-standard tasks (for example, in politics or economics) using analytical, managerial and linguistic competencies, while deeply knowing and understanding regional specifics.

"Foreign Regional Studies" is a specialty of opportunities where you can realize your talent and build professional potential," Vladislav Makarov concluded.
