On September 22, an excursion for schoolchildren to the Laboratory of Cellular and Genomic Technologies of Plants of the Southern Federal University Botanical Garden took place. The event was organized jointly with the project "Big Change" and ANO "National Priorities" within the framework of the project "Science. The territory of heroes".
Students of the Primorsky Secondary School named after Hero of the Soviet Union, Lieutenant General V. L. Neverov were able to go on an excursion to the scientific laboratory and see how real scientists work.
The purpose of the large-scale campaign, which is held in the Year of Science and Technology— is to show schoolchildren that science can be understandable and fascinating, tell them about scientific directions and establish a dialogue between scientists and the younger generation.
Children were able to visit an excursion to a scientific laboratory in which scientists clone plants from the Red Book for free. It was conducted by Candidate of Biological Sciences Vasily Chokheli.
An employee of the Laboratory of Cellular and Genomic Technologies of Plants of the Southern Federal University told schoolchildren why to isolate DNA from plants, showed how nutrient media are prepared in which samples from the Red Book grow, introduced the audience to the perennial oak tree – one of the attractions of the Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University and much more. But the most important thing is that the children were able to take part in this experiment and personally isolated DNA from a banana using improvised materials (detergent and salt).

Recall that in the ecosystem of the city and the region, the Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University performs not only a research, but also an educational function. Here is the main complex of green spaces – it is not for nothing that it is called the "lungs" of Rostov-on-Don.

"Education and enlightenment are our main tasks, so we do everything possible to make a visit to the Botanical Garden bright, informative and memorable for different age categories," said Tatiana Varduni, director of the Botanical Garden of the SFedU.
