Research interests:

Under the guidance of M.A. Sazykina research on biochemistry of oil-degrading bacteria and monitoring the environment using bacterial sensors is conducted in the Academy of Biology and Biotechnology of SFedU named after D.I. Ivanovsky. The collection of oil-degrading microorganisms isolated from the Kerch Strait has been created. The possibility of non-enzymatic oxidation of various oil components with the free-radical mechanism has been shown [1-3].

The scientific concept of using biosensors based on bioluminescent bacteria in toxicity monitoring of aquatic ecosystems enhancing the efficiency of monitoring has been created. The test system for monitoring of ecosystems contamination, based on the use of the complex of luminescent biosensors has been designed and implemented. The draft of methodological recommendations named "Assessment of the ecosystems components toxicity using a battery of bacterial lux-biosensors" has been produced [4].

The test system for assessing the toxicity of the components of marine waters ecosystems on the basis of native microalgae fluorimetry has been developed [5-6].

The new species of bioluminescent bacteria of the Vibrio genus promising for toxicity testing has been isolated from the Black Sea water. The name of Vibrio aquamarinus sp. nov. was given to the strain. The strain has been deposited in the Russian National Collection of Industrial Microorganisms (Vibrio aquamarinus VKPM B-11245) and in the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (Vibrio aquamarinus DSM 26054) [4].

Three strains of bioluminescent bacteria isolated from the water of the Black sea have been proposed as new test cultures for environment components toxicity testing [4, 7].

Lux-operons of these microorganisms can be used for further construction of the bacterial luminescent sensors.

For the first time the results on toxicity, genotoxicity, prooxidant activity, presence of mercury and arsenic, and substances damaging proteins and membranes in water of 23 springs of Rostov-on-Don in the period from 2009 to 2012 have been obtained. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons participation in the development of prooxidant effect and genotoxicity of spring water in Rostov- on-Don has been revealed [8-9].

The results of bottom sediments monitoring of the Lower Don during the years 2003-2015 allowed to register the time periods with the maximum pollution with genotoxic substances [10]1 The chronic character of pollution with genotoxicants of a number of the studied areas has been discovered. It is revealed that the source of bottom sediments genotoxicity of the Lower Don are oil products, individual PAHs (phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene), vanadium, nickel and mercury [11, 12].

According to the studies of the Azov and the Black Sea basin ecosystems exposed to anthropogenic pressure in 2014-2016 the nomenclature of clinically relevant resistance determinants characteristic for the studied biotopes was compiled.

Databases on ecosystems contamination in the Rostov region have been created [14-16].

A number of culture media for cultivation of Deinococcus radiodurans [17, 18] has been developed.

Chromatographic method of separation of Deinococcus radiodurans carotenoids using low pressure adsorption chromatography to obtain deinoxanthin with unique high antioxidant activity has been developed [19].

The technology of synbiotic preparations based on biofilms of Bacillus genus bacteria immobilized on plant substrates has been created.

The method for assessing the effectiveness of antibiotics and antimicrobial effects of the ultrasound radiation on pathogenic bacteria existing in the form of a biofilm was proposed and patented [20].

For a number of biotechnological developments M.A. Sazykina was awarded with the Diploma of the Government of the Rostov region of I degree "The best inventor and innovator of the Rostov Region"

(2013), and the staff of the laboratory under her leadership was awarded with the small and the big gold medals of the 6th International Biotechnology Fair "RosBioTech 2012" for the development probiotic preparations production technology based on Bacillus subtilis, and the technology of bioremediation of oil contaminated soils.

Currently, the laboratory headed by M.A. Sazykina conducts joint research of: biological activity of newly synthesized drugs with scientists from the A.E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry, Kazan Scientific Center, Russian Academy of Sciences; ecotoxicology of aquatic ecosystems with scientists from the Institute of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology of Max von Pettenkofer Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany).

The data obtained with the help of bacterial lux-biosensors showed that the integral toxicity of wastewaters in Munich and Rostov-on-Don during the observation period was similar. But a greater range of antibiotic resistance genes was detected in the wastewaters of Rostov-on-Don [21-24].

The UV protective activity of lipophilic cations, which contain phenolic or sterically hindered phenolic moieties [25-27], as well as UV-protective and antibacterial activity of novel hybrid benzofuroxane compounds and their derivatives [28-33] have been revealed.

Acting as a manager or an executive M.A. Sazykina took part in implementation of 27 projects. She is a member of the "Ecology of soil" leading scientific school of the Russian Federation. She is a reviewer of the journal «Folia Microbiologica», «Soil and Sediment Contamination. An International Journal », «International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology», «Living and biokosnye systems", “University news. North-caucasian region. Natural sciences series ".

She is the author of  123 publications (in the last 5 years), including 8 monographs, 18 databases, 5 invention patents and 33 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
