Research interests:

Fedorov Yu. A. operates in the southern Federal University, chief scientific officer-head of the Department of physical geography, ecology and nature conservation. It ; is widely known scientist in the field of Oceanography, hydrochemistry and isotope Geochemistry of oceanic, marine, estuarine and freshwater ecosystems. Currently, he and his team of associates working in the field of fundamental and applied research focused on cognition of the regularities of transformation of matter and energy in a geographical shell ; contact areas of the geospheres of the Earth "atmosphere ; hydrosphere ; cryosphere ; lithosphere ; biosphere", in the mixing zones "river-sea" on the boundaries of the media.
Professor Fedorov Yu. a. achieved the following most significant scientific and practical results:
• Developed a new scientific direction ; isotopic and chemical monitoring of oceanic, marine, estuarine and freshwater ecosystems.
- Proposed and theoretically substantiated the hypothesis of a cryogenic origin and evolution of the hydrosphere, which is based on the submission of the initial presence on the planet of water in gashydrates condition.
- Proved that the formation of acidic sulphate mine water occurs when the mixture of sulfates formed by bacterial and chemical oxidation of pyrite, groundwater, pore solutions and precipitation.
- Discovered the isotope effect associated with simultaneous fractionation of stable sulfur isotopes of sulfate and carbon bicarbonate ions in the water of the lake.Baikal and the mouth areas of the rivers, caused by strong anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem.
- Developed a model describing the relationship between equity flows and methane content on one side and the temperature of shallow water bodies on the other.
- Established close relationship between methane and mercury cycle in water and sediments of ponds and streams.
• Based on long and extensive fundamental and experimental research developed the theory of formation of geochemical barriers at the interface water-sediments in terms of influence on the behaviour of heavy metals on the paired time-space hydrogen sulfide and methane cycles.
- Developed a technique and methodology of a large-scale isotope studies of freshwater bodies, watercourses, estuaries, and inland seas, located on the territory of the former USSR (PP.The don, Kuban, Volga, Selenga, Amu-Darya, Syr-Darya, etc., lakes Baikal, Ladoga, etc., the sea of Azov, Caspian, Black, Aral, White).
- Contoured zones of anthropogenic influence of large industrial facilities (the Baikal pulp and paper plant, Astrakhan gas condensate complex, etc.) to water and sediments, and did quantify their contribution to the pollution of water bodies and watercourses.
- Developed and tested methodology for identification of oil spills and oil products using the method of stable isotopes and models of transformation of petroleum in time and space.
- Developed a model that adequately describes the transformation of oil and oil products in ocean, marine and freshwater ecosystems in time.
- By studying the distribution of specific activity of radionuclides cesium-137 and americium -241 and information on the distribution of the content of oil components was determined by the speed of sedimentation in the Azov sea, and the mercury in the section of sediments in the White sea has established a "background" values for this element, depth and time of formation of landslides in the Kandalaksha Bay.

Research projects:

Fedorov Yu. A.  head of the Leading scientific schools (Grants of the President of the Russian Federation) since 1996. for 2015 Nots "of the Global and regional geographical and environmental research and innovation", the French-Russian associated laboratory (MAL) "the Transformation of oil pollution in ecosystems of surface water bodies land, seas, coasts and their sustainability", over 50 research grants, government contracts and contracts prepared 25 candidates, 1 PhD, supervises 4 graduate students from Russia and abroad and is a consultant of 2 doctoral dissertations, opposed 2 doctoral and 7 candidate dissertations, author and co-author of textbooks and manuals, member of the editorial Board of three journals, two dissertation Councils for geographical Sciences, the Expert Council of the Russian Foundation for basic research in the Earth Sciences (Oceanography), expert of a number of other research funds and Ministry of education and science, Chairman of the international scientific-practical conference "Ecological problems. Looking to the future", Member of the conference organizing Committee School of marine Geology (Institute of Oceanology, P. p. Shirshov RAS), and several others, the President of the Rostov regional branch of Russian geographical society, awarded by the Government of the USSR jubilee medal "For military valour", and for achievements in science and education award of the French Republic "officer of the Order of Academic Palms", the badge "Honorary worker of Hydrometeorological service of Russia", honorary diplomas of the management of the Ministry of education and rector of SFU. Fedorov Yu. a. is actively engaged in teaching. He is the author and co-author of textbooks and teaching AIDS, the head of the master program "Ecology and nature management". His disciples work in Russia and countries near and far abroad. Most of them continue scientific and pedagogical activity in the southern Federal University.
