Research interests:

Environmental issues of continental water bodies, estuaries, inland seas, sea coasts and coastal zones, assessment of their vulnerability and self-cleaning capacity in case of oil pollution.

Due to a series of long-term (up to 15 years) field observations of natural changes in oil pollution composition in watercourses of the Lower Don River basin, in the Sea of Azov, on the Atlantic coasts of France and Spain, in the Loire River estuary, in the Strait of Kerch and on the Black Sea coast around oil terminals of the city of Novorossiysk, the rates of oil pollution natural destruction were determined and their dependence on the principal geographical factors was quantified in order to assess the self-cleaning capacity of coastal and aquatic ecosystems.

Research projects:

1. Petroleum components in the water bodies of the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea basins: regularities of distribution, dynamics of transformation and self-cleaning capacity assessment - Grant of the President of Russian Federation, 2010 - 2011;
2. Estimation of geographical factors' influence on the oil pollution distribution in the aquatic systems and on the dynamics of their self-cleaning - Federal special-purpose program, 2011 - 2013;
3. Assessment of fluxes of greenhouse gases and petroleum components in the aquatic and terrestrial landscapes of Rostov Region with the use of GIS-technologies - Grant of the Southern Federal University, 2013;

4. Transformation of oil pollution in the coastal, marine and continental aquatic ecosystems and their vulnerability assessment - Grant of the Russian foundation for basic research and the National Center for Scientific Research of France (CNRS), 2011 - 2015.

Teaching:

  • Oil pollution and self-cleaning
    The course “Oil Pollution and Self-Cleaning" is an optional special academic discipline taught in English and intended to give students a richer understanding of oil pollution issues and provide them with information about its sources, impact on the ecosystems and self-cleaning processes. After completing the course students will be able to demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the petroleum composition, proprieties, and behaviour in the environment, to understand the regularities of oil pollution natural destruction, to interpret the results of its detection and identification by different methods, to compare and to choose the most rational methods of combating oil pollution. The structure of the academic discipline includes 4 modules: 1) Composition and proprieties of oil and oil products; 2) Sources of oil pollution and its impacts on the ecosystems; 3) Regularities of oil pollution natural destruction; 4) Methods of combating oil pollution. Degree: Bachelor in Geography, Bachelor in Ecology and Environmental Management. Credits: 5 EСTS.
  • Remote and GIS-technologies
    The course “Remote and GIS-technologies" is a professional academic discipline taught in Russian and intended to give students general knowledge in contemporary remote methods of geographical and ecological studies as well as skills of GIS technologies use in such studies. Degree: Bachelor in Ecology and Environmental Management. Credits: 5 EСTS.
  • Climatology and meteorology
    The course “Climatology and meteorology" is a basic academic discipline for general professional knowledge. It is taught in Russian and intended to provide the first-year students with information about the Earths atmosphere, its composition, structure, atmospheric processes and regularities of climate formation, distribution and change in the Earths history. Degree: Bachelor in Geography, Bachelor in Ecology and Environmental Management. Credits: 5 EСTS.
  • Remote sensing methods in environmental monitoring and protection
    The course “Remote sensing methods in environmental monitoring and protection" is a professional academic discipline taught in Russian and intended to give students detailed knowledge and skills in contemporary remote sensing methods of environmental studies and in GIS technologies. Degree: Master of Ecology and Environmental Management. Credits: 5 EСTS.
