Excursion "Rostov - Port of Five Seas"

29.05.2017

SFedU students conducted an excursion on the Rostov embankment within the project "Discover Rostov".

Participants of the project, students-historians told the audience about the most unusual pages of the history of the embankment. Today, the embankment is the center of attraction for townspeople and tourists, a place for walks and pleasant vacations. But in olden days on the embankment there was a "port of five seas". It was the port that made the Don capital at the beginning of the 20th century a major industrial center of the South of Russia and the entire Russian Empire. From the young guides, the excursion participants learned how Rostov became the largest center of international trade in the south of the country and the third largest foreign trade turnover in 19th and 20th centuries. In preparation for the excursion, the students found in the local archives unique sources and visual evidence revealing the hitherto unknown history of the Rostov embankment of its various periods, including monuments and bridges across the Don river.
