Research at SFedU

The University’s key priority is to invest in R&D and to promote know-how exploitation.

All SFedU faculties and institutes are involved in research, but the peculiarity lies in the fact that the university has quite a number of divisions specializing in R&D. Eight Research Institutes, 221 labaratories, and nine Innovation and Technological Centers (dealing with nanotechnologies, bioengineering, mathematical modelling, etc.): the international research center Smart Materials Research Center, the Russian-French laboratory The Transformation of Polluting Agents in Aqua Ecosystems and Their Vulnerability Assessment, the interdisciplinary laboratory Synthesis and Diagnostics of Quantum Nanostructures, the shared use center Nuclear Medicine Center”, the basic research laboratory of nano-biotechnologies and new materials SFEDU-CJSC “Nanotechnologies MDT” are based at SFedU. SFedU Botanical Gardens boast their vast collection of rare plants and are at the same time a wonderful recreational area. One more achivement is the well-developed network of Shared Research Facilities, which are well-resourced with up-to-date laboratory equipment and are available to even those students and researchers who study and work at universities other than SFedU.

The Scientific Profile of University:

— Nanomaterials, nanotechnologies, facilities and systems based on them, intellectual materials

— Biotechnologies, living systems technologies, ecological security, the medicine of the future

— Information and telecommunication technologies, facilities and systems

—  Marine, aviation and spacerocket equipment, radio engineering, automation and control

— Architectural and art work, design, restoration, modernizing and creating objects of urban development, architecture, design and art

— Humanitarian technologies and models for developing human capital and tolerant socio-economic communities in a polyethnic region of Russia

 To keep in line with the commercialization trends, SFedU inspires various «spin-outs» and «technostarters». SFedU hosts 3 business incubators and has launched a number of science parks embracing more than 70 small enterprises involved in the manufacturing of medical equipment, energy saving systems, industrial electronics, software, telecommunications equipment, navigation equipment, corrosion inhibitors, lubricants, piezoelectric devices, etc.

Research at SFedU is focused, primarily, on 5 basic interdisciplinary areas:

 — Information technologies, nanotechnologies, intellectual materials

— Robot technology, systems of control, navigation and communication

— The medicine of the future, biotechnologies

— Geopolitics, geo-economics of the South of Russia

— The problems and prospects of development of the Azov-Black sea basin

SFedU students are encouraged to get involved in research starting from their first year of studies. Various conferences and so-called «Science Weeks» and «Science Festivals»  are organized in order to promote stuents’ interest in independent research.

The following figures describe the University’s research activities in 2014 and bear evidence to the University’s excellence in research:

  • SFedU researchers held 163 patents in force;
  • 251 monographs were published in Russia and 66 — abroad;
  • 5066 articles were published in scientific journals in Russia and 1015 — abroad;
  • 12 SFedU scientists are members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Education, and the Russian Academy of Art and Architecture;
  • SFedU participated in 1239 international scientific conferences and 52 international exhibitions.
