Welcome to the Faculty of Psychology at Southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don, Russia).

As Dean of the Faculty, I'd like to offer a special welcome to those of you who are considering studying as an undergraduate or graduate student with us. We have put together this web site in the hope of answering all the basic questions you may have, but if questions remain do not hesitate to contact us directly for further information.

Our staff of nationally and internationally known academics is dedicated to maintaining and developing our reputation for teaching and research. Our job is our life and we recognize the importance and influence of university education. Over recent years, we have enjoyed considerable success on both in teaching and research, and we are determined to maintain that momentum in the future. As the dean of the Department, I am fortunate to work in an environment that is friendly, enthusiastic and cooperative, and we all look forward to future challenges with confidence.

Psychology is a fascinatingly diverse subject, and our undergraduate degree course attempts to reflect the range of the field. We offer a general course of psychology, as well as opportunities to study electives in areas of particular staff and student interest. Staff research interests are diverse and range across social, developmental, pedagogical, educational, personality psychology and psychophysiology. Our academic interests are described in more detail on the faculty pages, and we welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduates who would like to work with us on these research topics.

About faculty

Faculty of psychology trains students to qualify as psychologists. Programs are available on both free and fee-paying bases. Entry into the faculty is traditionally competitive, with 3 to 5 prospective students applying for each opening.

High standard of education and training is provided by an academic staff including 10 Doctors of Science in Psychology and 32 Candidates.

The Faculty consists of 7 departments: psychophysiology and clinical psychology; social psychology; personality psychology and general psychology; psychology of development; pedagogy and educational psychology; valeology and physical culture; legal psychology.

The faculty offers postgraduate programs of studies (Candidates degree) and has a Board awarding advanced degrees (Doctors and Candidates) in six majors: psychology of development; pedagogic psychology; legal psychology; psychophysiology; general psychology; social psychology.

The faculty runs the Institute of psychology, business and management which offers tertiary programs of retraining for psychologists. There is also a School of Psychology for prospective students. The Faculty also operates the Centre of Tolerance for preventing violence and extremities in the Russian society.

Education

The Psychology faculty has the license for training bachelors, masters, specialists-psychologists, Ph.D. students and for delivering further education programs within Psychology field of study (020400).

Now the psychology faculty is switching over to a three-level education: Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees. According to the Decision of Academic and Methodical department of the Russian Federation the Psychology faculty at SFedU is officially authorized to confer Bachelor and Master and Ph.D. degrees in the field of Psychology. There are two dissertational Boards for candidate (Ph.D.) and Doctor degrees at the faculty.

The academic content at the Faculty is determined by the syllabus which is compiled by the Faculty Academic Council and approved by the University Vice-Rector for Academic affairs. The completion of these syllabi by students is certified by Diplomas of different levels (Bachelor, University Diploma, Master).

Taking and giving exams and credits, State graduation exams and graduation papers is done according to the Acts approved by the Academic Council of SFedU.

The terms and forms of controlling the students' performance (exam, pass-fail assessment) are defined by the syllabus approved by the Academic Council of the faculty.

Students are send down, transferred and allowed re-entry in accord with the procedure approved by the Academic Council of SFedU. The student who completes all the requirements of the curriculum is eligible for state assessment, the results of which condition his receiving the Diploma in corresponding type of higher education and qualification.

International students teaching arrangements are determined by SFedU Charter.

The rights and responsibilities of students are established in SFedU Charter.

Students are encouraged to be involved in student organizations on campus, such as students' self-governing bodies, monitors' board, student clubs and societies.

The fulfillment of the curriculum and its improvement is considered by the Academic Council of the Faculty.

The further education programs are implemented through the institute of psychology, management and business, a structural unit of the psychology faculty.

The Psychology Institute provides staff training and retraining for the state, municipal, commercial enterprises and organizations in the field of psychology, management, business, information protection.

Professional retraining is implemented within Practical psychology, Clinical psychology, Health Psychology, Management Psychology, Psychologist-business trainer study programs.

The institute also provides professional development programs in: Clinical psychology, Forensic psychology, Military psychology, Expert activity of the psychologist, Management Psychology, Technologies of conducting socially-psychological trainings, Complex system of protection of the information making the state secret, Protection of the confidential information against its leak on the automated channels, prenatal psychology.

Contents of retraining programs include general and special disciplines, practical courses and socially-psychological trainings.

The department of Institute of psychology includes highly skilled experts with the experience of work in the field of psychology from 10 till 20 and more years. Among them are doctors and candidates of psychological sciences, and also practical psychologists of the City, Regional psychological centres, teachers of psychology.

Students of Institute of psychology upon the graduation get the state diploma about the professional retraining, which gives the right to conduct a new kind of professional work (in sphere of practical psychology, psychology of health, forensic psychology, psychology of management, etc. depending on the chosen direction).

The School of a young psychologist (for pupils of 9 - 11 forms) operates at the faculty as a foundation program. The school provides primary knowledge and skills in the field of psychology. Pupils who are about to enroll the psychology faculty can check up the correctness of choice of their future professions and be prepared for entrance examinations on the given program of education.

The faculty annually holds 2 rounds of the regional Olympiad for students of the school. In 2009-2010 the faculty of psychology plans to hold "The Olympiad of Southern Federal University on psychology", under condition of its inclusion to the List of the Olympiads of pupils in 2009-2010.

Research

Research activities at the faculty are concentrated in the following areas: general psychology, psychophysiology and clinical psychology, social psychology, personality psychology, psychology of development and akmeology, forensic and military psychology, pedagogy and educational psychology, psychology and higher education pedagogy, health and physical training psychology. Overall the psychology department conducts research on 57 scientific themes within the frameworks of ten research areas.

The research findings of the teaching staff are published in Russian and international editions (in 2008 there were 340 publications, including 8 monographs and 58 manuals, 9 manuals are printed in international editions, 87 - in the central Russian editions). All publications are used in the academic process: methodical recommendations are being developed on their basis and courses are being updated.

The faculty teachers take an active part in prestigious international and Russian conferences (in 2008 teachers of the faculty participated in 120 conferences and delivered 129 presentations).

In September, 2007 the psychology faculty held the fourth All-Russian congress of the Russian psychological society, with the participation of more than 1000 Russian and overseas psychologists.

The faculty teachers were awarded various certificates of excellence for active work and topical research.

Teaching staff regularly takes part in professional development programs at Russian and international research centers (Germany, Israel, the USA, Finland). The psychology faculty closely co-operates with various domestic and international higher educational establishments and research centres.

Annually students' scientific conferences take place at the faculty. Students of the psychology faculty of SFedU repeatedly take prize-winning places at the students' scientific conferences held at Moscow State University of Lomonosov, at St.-Petersburg University and others. Teachers and students of the faculty actively participate in the activity of Rostov regional society of psychologists.

Research interests: Social Psychology of Communication and Individual Expressive Behavior

The researchers have devised theoretical-methodological principles of studying an individual expressive behavior; have developed the structural-functional model of non-verbal means of communication; have defined the essential characteristics of interpreting an individual non-verbal expressive behavior; have worked out the theoretical scheme of analyzing a non-verbal interaction; have described the structure of individual socio-perceptual abilities in the context of analyzing social and emotional intellect.

Within this area: cultural-psychological, socio-psychological and gender factors of creating and transforming fn individual visage are being investigated; an axiological-conceptual approach towards an individual visage is being developed; conceptions about a beautiful woman are analyzed; the theoretical scheme of examining a personality as a communicator is developed and the socio-psychological portrait of a hindered communicator is depicted; the socio-psychological determinants of transforming the conceptions about another individual as a friend or an enemy are determined; the phenomenon of “a complete communication block” is described in connection with analysing envy, as well as the phenomenon of expressing hope at different stages of human life is considered.

Research interests: Existential-Humanistic Psychology, Communicational Ontopsychology

The theoretical and empirical research of communication,founded on existential-humanistic psychology, has served as the basis for originating Communicational Ontopsychology, or the axiological-conceptual approach towards communication and personality, which discloses the existential essence of communication and its role in human life. Taking into account the above axiological-conceptual approach, an applied research in advertising and mass media is being carried out. The researchers have been considering the issues of socio-cultural mediation of communication, have been searching ways and means of mutual understanding and the resolution of conflicts; they have also been analyzing the influence of manipulating abilities of a personality on the satisfaction with relationship, as well as inner characteristics of personalities who either manipulate or are manipulated.

Research interests: Psychology of Hindered Communication and Conflict Interaction

The scholars investigate socio-psychological determinants of conflict interaction; analyze the conceptions about oneself and another person as a difficult communication partner; examine the dynamics factors of these conceptions and study the age, gender and cross-cultural differences about oneself and another person as a difficult communication partner.

Research interests: Socio-Psychological Factors of Forming and Developing Personal Relations

The program, theoretical foundations and methods of expressive-dance training have been worked out; the progress of the relations among the participants (realized or partly unrealized attitudes towards oneself, to others and the group etc.) in the process of expressive-dance training has been studied.

Within this area, the researchers tackle the issue of control in interpersonal relations, the connection of controlling tendencies in behavior with the success in teaching and have defined the socio-psychological portrait of a female professional psychologist, which would facilitate the profession. The scholars have devised the theoretical and empirical models of the controlling type personality and analyzed how intensely top and middle-level managers need control.

Research interests: The Development of Gender Identity in Interpersonal Communication

The researchers have developed the theoretical-methodological principles of investigating interpersonal communication from the point of gender theory on the basis of social reality modeling, with the imperative measurement of personal relations system taken into account. The gender assessment of interpersonal relations, the expression of personal characteristics in communication and the social perception of partners, employing the system of gender conceptions, have been analyzed. The scholars have been working out the theoretical scheme of analyzing, how, in communication, a person’s gender characteristics, which under various socio-psychological conditions (self-fulfilling prophecies, attributive processes, social expectations, social monitoring etc) are perceived as stable manifestations of masculinity and femininity.

Within this area the researchers explore the following aspects of a personality’s existence: 1) how gender differences, as well as sexual preferences, lead to establishing certain imperative relations between communication partners; 2) how social characteristics of male and female personalities are linked with the character of the relationship system between them; 3) how the system of individual relations determines gender differences and to which extent the perceived psychological differences are determined by nature and to which extent – by society.

Research interest: Psychology of Health

The interests comprise investigating socio-psychological conceptions of health, illness, healthy way of life; developing cultural-historical approach towards such issues as health, illness and healthy way of life; devising criteria and factors of physical, psychic, social and spiritual health; studying axiological-motivational aspects and constituents of healthy way of life; health-improving resources of Physical Training.

Research interests: Psychology of Emergency Situations

This direction focuses on the socio-cultural context of emergency situations; the existential essence of emergency situations; emergency situations and extreme human abilities; situation-personality interaction in emergency environment; individual tolerance in emergency situations; professional-technological aspects in emergency situations.

Research interests: Social Psychology of a Woman’s Beauty

This area deals with the cultural-psychological, socio-psychological and gender characteristics of beautiful women and concepts of them.

Research interests: Social Psychology of Business Communication, Social Psychology of the Phenomenon of Gift and Gift-Giving

This concentration studies the cultural-psychological, socio-psychological and gender characteristics of business communication and the phenomenon of gift in business and interpersonal communication.

International cooperation

At present the curriculum does not include modules of international training, however the administration and the teaching staff of Psychology Faculty have been working on developing exchange agreements with European universities.

In January 2008, Psychology Faculty of Southern Federal University and Education Department of University of Oulu (Finland) concluded an agreement on academic exchanges.

The teaching staff of the faculty has long standing relations (since 1992) with Psychology Department of Dortmund Technical University (Germany). In Fall Semester 2008 three Master students had a short-term training (10 days) at Psychology Department of Dortmund Technical University (Germany).

Furthermore, the working group of the program actively and continually searches for new cooperation opportunities with universities of other countries (France, UK, Canada), for example, the institute of physiology (Prague, Czechia), Athenian National University (Greece), Bar-Ilan and Tel Aviv universities (Israel), Swinburne University (Melbourne, Australia), Michigan University (the USA).

At present the curriculum is delivered in Russian. But in the nearest future (2010 - 2012) it is intended to develop some modules of this program in English in order to promote exchange programs.

Within the framework of the international exchange students undertake a pedagogical student teaching in general educational and higher educational establishments in Germany, take part in joint Russian-German psycho-physiologic seminars, in international conferences held by EFPTA (European Federation of Psychology Teachers? Associations).
